Paula Badosa is out due to injury at the Australian Open and will fall out of the ‘top20’

The Catalan has made it official that she won’t arrive in time for Monday’s debut with the American McNally

The first bad news for Spanish tennis in Australia has come two days before the start of the tournament. Paula Badosa has confirmed that she will not be able to participate in the first major due to a muscle injury in her left leg that occurred at the end of her quarterfinal match at the WTA 500 in Adelaide with Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Jorge García’s pupil had already been forced to leave on Friday in Adelaide where she did not jump to play the semifinal that faced her with Daria Kasatkina.

The Catalan, after passing medical tests, has announced her withdrawal on social networks. Her setback will force her to be unemployed for several weeks and it is a heavy blow as far as her ranking is concerned.

Badosa, who was unable to defend last year’s title in Sydney this week, will also subtract 240 points from the round of 16 of the 2022 Open. That will drop her beyond 20th place in the WTA.

The eleventh favorite, who had to face the American Catherine McNally, will be replaced by a ‘lucky loser’, in this case Laura Pigossi. The Spanish representation in the first ‘major’ is reduced to Garbiñe Muguruza, Nuria Párrizas and Cristina Bucsa.
